This year Merchant Navy day fell on Tuesday 3rd September 2024 and was organised by Geoff Davis who is a member of the RFA Association as well as the Merchant Navy Association.
The commemoration took place at the Merchant Navy Monument on Plymouth Hoe and this was the fifth year since its dedication in 2019. The main guest was the Lord Mayor of Plymouth Councillor Tina Tuohy and the ceremony started at 1100 with the march on of the Standards, who paraded and formed up behind the Monument. The Plymouth MN Standard was carried by Stephen Tang and the RFAA Branch Standard by Richard Walker. Those present were then welcomed by Geoff Davis. The Lord Mayor then gave her address and this was followed by the Service of Remembrance led by the Reverend Tim Partridge. Wreaths were then laid followed by the Exhortation, the Last Post sounded by Bugler Dave Harding and one minute silence. Reveille and the National Anthem followed.
Ten wreaths were laid on the Monument and there was a very good turn out of those attending the Service.
Thanks go to the Parade Marshall and all the Standard Bearers and to all who attended.
