I am very sorry to have learned that Captain David Gerrard has crossed the bar. He was a good shipmate. I sailed with him twice in RFA Bacchus and RFA Resource when he was Chief Officer. He was a great source of info and nostalgia on this site and others. I send my condolences to Mrs Gerrard and family. RIP.

Came across your website by accident - but what a find ! My grandfather was Capt. George William Webster who served on a number of RFA vessels. I have access to his records and the names/photos of a few of his ships but would really like to know more. If anyone has any knowledge concerning him as Capt or during his time as other ranks then please get in touch.

Great to view photos of the RFA mariners. Some of the photos circa 1980 of the RFA Lyness(USNS Sirius) during the time I was 3rd engineer on the turnover crew really bring back memories. My two years spent in Empress State Building and Carpenter House were some of the best years of my career. Fair winds and following seas to all who sail for RFA.

Peter Hogan
Please could you remove Peter Hogan's as the painter of the pencil drawing of Stromness and the colour image of RFA Fort Rosalie as they have been mistakenly accredited to him and he is not the artist. However he did paint many pictures of RFAs prior to there construction or completion and others that the originals went with the ships or were displayed at RFA HQ. He also produced a few pencil drawing covers for 'Force Four'. Drawings of the then projected 'New AOR' Sir Tristram prior to refit Sir Galahad prior to completion RFA's at Sea with a Type 42 a Colour painting of Argus and Rover Class steaming in company. 3 Paintings of Stromness and 1 of Tarbatness and a RAS with an O Tanker and Stretched Type 22. and RFA Kharki in the Far East as a Christmas Card.

I just found out on Ships Nostalgia that Radio Officer Kevin McNicholas passed away in August 2015 and was buried on the 10th September. He was 58 years old. He sailed on many RFA vessels and was proud to serve his country. After the RFA Kevin worked in the North Sea and went on to work in senior IT roles ashore. His fantastic bawdy humour his great sense of duty and honour and his precious friendship will be missed by all who knew him.

In April 1982 my mother Jean Hoare was sub-postmistress at Beaumont Rd PO Plymouth. One Sat. pm Capt Philip Roberts of RFA Sir Galahad visited the post office closed by this time and asked my mother if she would reopen her office to sell him stamps for the crew as they were soon to sail for the Falklands. Naturally she did without hesitation. Captain Roberts was very appreciative and left my motherhis business card with his home address in Woking. It was stamped in blue letters RFA SIR GALAHAD. Handwritten on the back of the card were the following words: "Falklands Crisis. Called in P.O. Sat p.m. Purchased stamps for crew." I recently found the card while clearing my mother's house and have kept it safe. Not sure if it belongs in a museum. It is a small but interesting piece of RFA memorabilia.

Hi I was in the R.F.A as an Engineer Cadet ( Riversdale Liverpool '71-75. Phase 2 at sea on 'Retainer' and 'Derwentdale'(73-74) . . Then time as a J/E/O. on'Tideflow' 'Regent' 'Sir Geraint 'and 'Green Rover'. Left somewhat prematurely very unsettled and had a year with T.J.Harrisons . . . .I orginally joined the R.F.A. as a Deck Cadet but my father ( Engineering Lectuter at Riversdale)persuaded me to switch to Engineering just prior to the start of the course which with hindsight wasnt a good move as it turned out I had a difficulty with enclosed spaces Oh well. I've always maintained my love for ships and the sea though !

Choff thanks for that information obviously i was ill informed and was jumping to conclusions i did not know all the facts i thought it was just for Naval personnel and not for the general public or that it had a world wide subscription. now i completely understand the monthly issue.

Perhaps the fact that Navy News has a print run of 60 000 and is sold in newsagents has something to do with it. "The newspaper is distributed free to serving personnel whilst worldwide subscribers (8 000 ) continue to grow. Sales of the newspaper (30 000 ) through newsagents and supermarkets remain constant." Subscriptions cost £25 per year. So I don't think your complaint is valid Harry.

how come the Gunline only gets published 3 times a year yet the Navy News i'm led to believe is published monthly is this so or am i jumping the gun here if so seems rather biased in my opinion.

For George Mortimer Mr Mortimer long time no see! Finally a few days ago I put pen to paper to admit I was on Pearleaf during the conflict. 30 years and a few nightmares later. Not only did I put it to paper but its on the web http://www.falklandswar.org.uk/ and gives my account of those days. I work these days as a warranty surveyor out of London inspecting hulls and vessels for specialised jobs. let me know if you would like further information my memory gets clogged at times!!

Kind regards Paul

That is the latest edition Harry. Gunline is now only published 3 times a year. (Times are hard in Defence!) The Spring edition is expected soon available in the usual places.
