Plymouth and District Branch Christmas Lunch at Copthorne Hotel 09 December 2023

Remembrance in the South West

3/12/2023

This year, 2023 members of the Plymouth and District Branch of the RFA Association took part in many events to mark Remembrance.
The first event was the 2 minutes silence and wreath laying at 1100 on Friday 10th November at the Memorial on Burrow Hill Plymstock, Plymouth where the Branch Standard was carried by Richard Walker accompanied by the RBL Standard and the RAF Police Standard. It was a very windy day so it was quite a struggle carrying the Standards but at least the showers kept off.
That evening the Branch standard was paraded at the Festival of Remembrance organised by the Federation of Plymouth and District Ex-Services Associations in St Andrews Church, Plymouth. Also present was the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Colour carried by CPO(Chef) Martin Atwell and eighteen other standards who marched on at the beginning and off again at the end.
The next event was the two minutes silence on Saturday the 11th November at 1100 at St Andrews Church where the Branch Standard was carried by Richard Walker with two other Standards in attendance. Standards were also paraded at two other venues around the city.  This a short but very poignant service outside the church.
Remembrance Sunday the 12th November started of dry and several members of the Branch assembled at the citadel to march to the Naval War Memorial on Plymouth Hoe for the service at 1100.  The Branch standard was again carried by Richard Walker and the MNA Standard by Stephen Tang, who is member of the Branch. Also present were Peter Lannin who laid a wreath at the War Memorial on behalf of the Branch, Charlie Rogers, Darby Allen and. Bob Burt, who laid the wreath at the Merchant Navy Monument after the main service.

The rain began to hammer down as the parade marched onto the Hoe and remained poring until after the service had ended. Geoff Wilson said that the rain in Falmouth stopped just before the wreath laying started.
At Ashburton on the 12th November Maurice Mann laid a wreath on behalf of the RFAA.
A wreath was also laid at Falmouth on behalf of the RFAA.
Finally, Charlie Rogers and Jack Frost attend the wreath laying in the afternoon at Callington and then attended the cream tea in the town hall afterwards.
