The funeral of Captain John Stones took place at the United Reform Church, Princetown on Friday 8 April 2016. John had died unexpectedly following complications after a heart attack. There were so many attendees, the three standard bearers, Richard Walker, Ray Jago and Charlie Rogers, escorted the coffin from the hearse to the doors - there was no room inside the Church. The appropriate raising and lowering of the standards was observed in the corridor and the coffin escorted out at the end of the service. Inside the Church, it was standing room only with around 200 attendees from all the various organisations John had been involved with during his service with the RFA and since his retirement.
It was pleasing to see Captain Sam Shatlock and his wife representing the Commodore and the RFA service. John had many hobbies including Art, RNLI, all types of music, amateur dramatics, Rotary Club, the Falklands, reading and poetry, especially Kipling.
He married Wendy in 1968; joined the RFA in 1971; first captain post was the Gold Rover.
